Our history

• Lake Leather was founded in the mid-1980s by Ian Lake, who started out making leather goods and selling them at country markets along Australia's east coast.
• The first shop was in Cobargo, on the NSW south coast, trading as South Coast Leather. The original building was lost in the bushfires on New Year's Eve 2019, during the 2019/20 fire season.
• Our Evandale store opened in November 2001, and the business has since grown to four Tasmanian stores.
• Georgie took over as owner in 2018.

What we make ourselves

• Evandale workshop: belts, bags, purses, wallets, aprons, book covers, bookmarks, keyrings, baby booties and more, made on site.
• Materials: most of our own bag designs are lined with suede, and we use solid brass fittings wherever possible.
• The Tasmanian Slipper Company: our own brand of sheepskin slippers, boots and slides, made in Evandale from 100% Australian sheepskin, on machinery we bought from the retiring makers of the Cherokee Starlight slippers.
• Our own bag range: designed by Lake Leather and made exclusively for us in Kolkata (Calcutta), India.

• Sheepskin slippers and boots

• Cowhide rugs, sheepskins and other skins, cushions and homewares
• Brands we stock include R.M. Williams, Akubra, Pierre Cardin and Thomas Cook.
