About Akubra

Akubra is Australia's best-known hat maker, and its story has Tasmanian roots: the business began in the 1870s, when Benjamin Dunkerley started making hats in Hobart. Today Akubra hats are still made in Australia, at the company's factory in Kempsey, New South Wales, from pure rabbit fur felt. The felt is tough, holds its shape and sheds rain, so a well-cared-for Akubra will last for many years.

• Cattleman: the classic Australian bush hat, with a tall crown and wide brim.
• Coober Pedy: a wide-brimmed outback hat, in shades such as Sand, Santone, Khaki, Fern and Eucalypt.
• Leisure Time: a smaller, everyday brim that suits town and country.
• Traveller: a smart, versatile hat for travel and everyday wear.
• Riverina, Snowy River and the women's Avalon, in selected stores.

Our stock changes all the time, so if you're after a particular style, colour or size, please call the store before you visit and we'll check for you.

Finding your Akubra size

• Akubra hats are sized in centimetres, by the measurement around your head.
• Measure around your head with a soft tape, about 1cm above your ears and across the middle of your forehead.
• A hat should sit comfortably without pressing. If you're between sizes, go up a size and use a hat filler to fine-tune the fit.
• Best of all, try one on in store and we'll help you get it right.

Caring for your Akubra

• Pick your hat up by the brim, not the crown, to keep its shape.
• Brush it with a soft brush, going anticlockwise around the hat.
• If it gets wet, let it dry naturally at room temperature, sitting on its crown, away from heaters and direct sun.
• Store it upside down on its crown, or on a hat rack, so the brim keeps its shape.
