A Dram Deserves Good Leather
There are some things Tasmania does particularly well.
Cold mornings. Wild weather. Very good leather and, as it happens, a rather excellent dram.
Tasmanian Whisky Week is upon us, which means distilleries, bars and whisky lovers across the island are raising a glass to one of Tasmania’s finest exports.
Naturally, we thought we ought to join them.
We may know considerably more about leather than we do about the finer points of a single malt, but we do know this:
A good dram deserves good leather.
Made Better With Time
There’s something rather familiar about the way people talk about good whisky.
Character. Age. Craft. Where it came from. How it changes over time.
Sound familiar?
Good leather isn't supposed to remain exactly as you found it. It softens. It darkens. It picks up the marks of wherever you've taken it. A belt becomes your belt. A bag settles into the shape of being carried. A wallet develops the sort of patina that simply cannot be hurried.
Much like the contents of your glass, some things are worth giving a little time.

Whisky people can detect an extraordinary number of things in a glass.
Oak. Smoke. Vanilla. Spice. Dark chocolate.
We're particularly interested in that last one.
Rich chocolate and whisky-toned leathers feel particularly at home at this time of year. Deep browns, cognacs and warm tans against winter wool, denim and heavy coats.
Consider it our version of a tasting flight. Except you can wear it home...
Something for the Gentleman
There is also the small matter of Father's Day approaching.
We shan't make a fuss just yet.
But if the gentleman in question appreciates a good whisky, chances are he'll appreciate something else that gets better with age.
A proper leather wallet. A belt that'll see him through a good many years. A bag for weekends away.
Useful things. Handsome things.
The sort of things he'd never think to replace himself.
One for the Road
Tasmanian Whisky Week is a rather good reminder to celebrate the things made well, enjoyed slowly and kept around for a while.
We'll raise a glass to that.
And should a little leather happen to accompany it, all the better.
